The Diablo Foothills Winegrowers Association Is Granted Official...

Brentwood, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) April 09, 2011

Hannah Nicole Vineyards and Winery, Brentwood’s first winery, today announced that The Diablo Foothills Winegrowers Association is an official 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization. Founded in February, the organization represents a collective effort between commercial winemakers, home hobbyists and local entrepreneurs. Members of the organization, The Contra Costa Winegrowers Association and other vintners recently convened at Hannah Nicole to hold their first meeting, focusing their discussions on formally establishing a unique American Viticultural Area (AVA) for a Contra Costa County appellation.

Like their counterparts in The Livermore Valley, The Diablo Foothills Winegrowers Association will develop a comprehensive study and petition the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) to designate a unique AVA for the area. The study will focus on the terrain that lies east of the Diablo Foothills, including Eastern Contra Costa County, and other contiguous areas.

“Achieving NPO status for The Diablo Foothills Winegrowers Association is an important step towards formally designating Contra Costa County as a world class wine producing region,” said Neil Cohn, CEO and co-founder of Hannah Nicole Vineyards and Winery. “The work that lies ahead will represent a collective effort by our organization, The Contra Costa Winegrowers Association and numerous AVA and viticultural experts who are located within the region and beyond. Our common goal is to educate the public about the specific climatic influence and terroir of our area.”

“We couldn’t agree more with the vintners and winegrowers in our area who are uniting to pursue an AVA that reflects who we are,” said Gertie Planchon, co-proprietor of Planchon Vineyard. “We really are a unique region and we want to support every effort to get that message out to the public.”

“Holland and Knight is pleased to help assess the climate, geography and topography of the area that lies east of the Diablo Range,” said Michael Newman, Partner and head of Holland & Knight’s Alcohol Beverage Team. “The evidence seems to point to significant temperature, humidity and precipitation differences between Eastern Contra Costa County and other areas, suggesting the need for an independent AVA. We look forward to lending our support in this effort.”
