Tokyo Go-Go, the hip San Francisco sushi restaurant, has become a hub for first and blind dates in the Mission District, according to its new business listing on SFGate.com.
With its contemporary underwater decor of bubble lights and dots suspended from the ceiling, the interesting open water ambiance is great for inspiring conversation between strangers. The restaurant even turns down the lights a little on Friday evenings to create an intimate atmosphere for their guests.
“I am not sure if it’s the atmosphere, the great people-watching location, or the energy we have here, but for some reason many blind dates occur here," said co-owner Kevin Jiang. "We see a lot of the same couples come back to celebrate their anniversaries.”
Tokyo Go-Go is modeled after an izakaya, which is a Japanese version of a happy hour establishment, where the drinks are the main focus and food is served as an accompaniment. The trendy sushi spot received a Best of Sushi Award in 2004 for their Japanese fare with dishes such as Sunshine—prepared with hamachi, cilantro, wasabi tobiko and quail egg—and Dynamite, a baked spicy scallop with wasabi tobiko.
The San Francisco Japanese restaurant opened its doors during the height of the dot-com bubble in 1998 and quickly became a gathering place for young hipsters that dress to impress, dine on exotic sushi and drink sake. Tokyo Go-Go is proud of its always fresh, never frozen products in order to provide an authentic Japanese / sushi cuisine.
“When it comes to food, sushi has always been considered a romantic food,” says owner Kevin Jiang. “With its mix of colors, texture and essence it’s definitely an aphrodisiac that brings lovers together as they sample the exotic flavors.”
